Finding myself: A Journey in Self-Care

Thursday I woke up and like magic, turned 50. Yep, it’s been half a century since I came into this world on a Friday the 13th.  When I woke up, I struggled with planning and indulging in a day of self-care. Instead of letting waves of frustration flood me, I paused and thought about the irony. I am a recovering Type A, so it can drive me bonkers when I don’t have at least a vague idea how my day… Read more »

Essential Oils to Help Moms Relax

I am so stressed out just trying to pick the right headline for this post, so please bear with me if it isn’t particularly click-baity, lol, and don’t be surprised if you come back later and it’s changed. What does the word ‘relax’ evoke for you? For me,  I often associate it with that Frankie Goes to Hollywood song lyric ‘relax, don’t do it.’ The online Webster’s dictionary’s fourth definition is “to relieve from nervous tension.” As some of you… Read more »

xThe Twelve Cardinal Scents of Christmas

I don’t know about you, but for me this time of year is not only magical, it’s also stressful. Around this time every year, I am operating under the false impression that everything is under control. The internal dialogue sounds something like this: Christmas tree up? Check. Gifts hidden from the kids? Check. Tree decorated? Umm….Nope. Gifts wrapped? Of course not!! Holiday post cards sent? Maybe. The list goes on. You get the idea. The illusion of preparedness rules until… Read more »

The Art of Relaxation

Are you a recovering Type A personality (like myself) perpetually in search of zen? If so, you might consider aromatherapy. Two years ago, I realized my health was in jeopardy when my family doctor gave me an Rx for what he characterized as ‘anxiety attacks.’ Just the thought of taking prescription drugs to manage my stress was stressing me out!! Taxing Work (Pun Intended) After a taxing day at work (oh, the irony….I worked for Bloomberg BNA’s International Tax unit),… Read more »

It’s almost Valentine’s Day again” (…and I have no idea what trinket to offer my loved one?) I certainly can relate….balancing your desire to melt your love’s heart and prove your unwavering love and devotion without going overboard on pricey, tacky ‘tchotchkes’ or trinkets. Oh what to do? Never fear, read… Read more »

I am so excited….I just signed up for Erin Chase’s Grocery Budget Makeover and took advantage of signing up at the same time for her new MyFreezEasy program as well. Since the beginning of time (well, ok, since I became a working parent), my mom, who studied Home Economics at Cornell, has insisted that I would save time and money if I cooked meals ahead and froze them. Sixteen years later (never too late to learn), I am finally gearing… Read more »

Guest blogger Stephanie Keltner shares the health benefits of listening to relaxing music. For many of us, a day wouldn’t be complete without music. Whether you wake up to it, pass time at work listening to it, or even play a soothing song or two for your sleeping baby, music plays a role in nearly every part of our waking lives. And whether you like Mozart and the classics, alternative, jazz, acoustic or anything in between, the benefits for… Read more »

Last weekend, thanks to a Groupon offer, I tried out Bethesda Salt Cave, touted as the first and only salt cave in the mid-Atlantic state of Maryland. I opted for the special deal for two sessions and thankfully had a willing volunteer, my 12 year old son, who tagged along for the halotherapy experience. The salt cave consists of chunks of imported Himalayan pink salt adorning the walls, with ground salt on the floor (think ‘beach’ but instead of sand… Read more »
