Essential Oils Blends to Tame Your Tension

Essential Oil Blends

Are you a recovering Type A personality (like myself) perpetually in search of zen?

If so, you might consider aromatherapy. Two years ago, I realized my health was in jeopardy when my family doctor gave me an Rx for what he characterized as ‘anxiety attacks.’

Just the thought of taking prescription drugs to manage my stress was stressing me out!!

Taxing Work (Pun Intended)

After a taxing day at work (oh, the irony….I worked for Bloomberg BNA’s International Tax unit), I thought I was going to collapse on the metro platform.

The mental image of collapsing on the filthy metro platform, or even worse, falling onto the rails made my heart race. I thought I was suffocating–it felt like the air in my lungs was being pumped out.

Who would stop to call for help if I did, I thought.

I had to resort to self talk to keep my wits about me and engineered a playlist of relaxing music to guide me as I took deep breaths. Certainly I wasn’t afraid of riding the metro?

Connecting the Dots

I never experienced these frightening sensations on my commute into work, only at the end of an arduous day filled with unrealistic expectations and increased responsibilities, with no compensation adjustment.

At night, when I would lie down to sleep, the veins in my legs felt like they were going to explode. Scary! Pragmatic recovering Type A me would pause momentarily in ‘mom mode’ and wonder, “Who will chauffeur my kids if something were to happen to me?”

Aromatherapy to the Rescue

Yes, I filled the Rx, but vowed never to use it. I was concerned that the meds would make me numb. Somehow I stumbled upon Essential Oils and decided to give aromatherapy a whirl (and take deep breaths). I ordered a starter kit and diffuser.

You can find a reasonably priced starter kit on Amazon.

Alas, my health improved, thanks in part to aromatherapy (stress management!) and thanks to a colleague (actually, several colleagues) who validated the toxicity of our work environment.

[Note: I am forever grateful to these former coworkers/friends!]

Waiting to Excel (or Inhale, Exhale)

After making the mental shift of not caring as much about a toxic situation and moving on to excel at the same place of employment, my aromatherapy fell by the wayside. From time to time I would diffuse blends I concocted blindly, but I really didn’t quite know what the heck I was doing.

Small Town, Big Score

Well, luck would have it that in my newly adopted small town, I discovered an aromatherapy workshop.

The facilitator, Lauren, has a medical background (dermatologist assistant) and spoke to both the art and science of aromatherapy.

To that end, after explaining essential oils (simple and blends) and relating her personal story, Lauren gave us recipes and supplies. We worked in small groups at cheerfully decorated workstations (think spring colors) to create aromatherapy products we could bring home to our families.

The Art of Relaxation

Bath Tub Zen

I made fabulous treats that stimulated my olfactory nerves, including:

  1. Custom scented bath salts;
  2. Chemical-free hand sanitizer (which doubles as a facial toner);
  3. Muscle relaxation and immunity rollers; and
  4. Sanity spritzer (just kidding!).

The After Party

Reflecting on the wealth of knowledge I gained at the workshop, I followed up with the facilitator for an in-home consultation on best practices/essential oil blends for my family’s specific needs.

Lauren gladly provided me with a free, gorgeous essential oils resource guide. I also purchased a separate book– couldn’t resist– Oil + Glass which includes essential oils recipes to address concerns ranging from:

  1. Immunity protection;
  2. Beauty/skincare;
  3. Chemical-free cleaners;
  4. Pregnancy;
  5. Mind/body/spirit wellness; and
  6. Babies and children.

I cannot wait to test out the recipes and report back!!

I’m happy to report that I no longer worry about collapsing on a metro platform. That stressful Washington, DC commute has been replaced with a scenic mountain view commute in central Pennsylvania!

Have you tried aromatherapy? I’d love to hear about your favorite essential oils.
P.S. We also ate healthy snacks at the workshop,  including yummy black bean brownies made with peppermint essential oil (almost no sugar) and drank a delicious immunity tea.
